What you can do
I
could tell you at this point its ankle grabbing time. I could tell you
the night before to make sure your butt is clean because its about to
meet your lips. I am not an alarmist nor am I a tree hugging hippy. I
do have children in my home and I would like them to experience life
without debt to utility companies and leave them a trashed out planet
with few resources. There are things you can do as an individual
to make a difference in
this life and save yourself some money. If everybody did these simple
things instead of being
so wasteful you would be amazed what a difference we as a society could
make. Most of these you have heard of but some may be new. This is the
year 2007. There are things they should be doing standard in the
building of new homes to help preserve what we have.
You can recycle.
Drive a smaller, fuel-efficient car on a daily basis
Switch all possible bulbs to fluorescent type energy savers.
Get rid of your big hot water tank and
get a tankless/in line water heater.
Use a below-ground heating and cooling system for your home. This is
known as Geothermal heating/cooling. Buyers of homes can force builders
to start using this awesome technology. Imagine energy usage getting
cut 75% in each home.

Plant trees (not
silver leaf maples or Bradford pears --
the 20-year trees home builders
use are worthless). I'm talking good oaks or other types of trees
that
last 100 years or more; ones that will eat and store vast amounts of
CO2. I really feel this won't mount to a hill of beans for
controlling CO2 and is just a feel good patch or a projection of "Hey,
I am doing something" but trees provide shade, increase property
values, add natural beauty, and provide natural habitat for the
local critters.
Replace your windows or only buy a new
home with windows that have the high-performance windows. The newer
windows have solar tinting, aluminum frames, insulation and different
types of gases that not only block heat both ways, but stop fading of
furniture and carpet. They are incredible. Window technology is very
advanced and the average home builder does not offer them.
Encourage power companies to convert to wind farms off our coasts due to the amount of land they require and the cost of and too the land or nuclear energy instead of destroying the land digging for coal to burn
Stop
logging all the damn forests and the Amazon. We need to develop new
technologies and materials and get away from the heavy use of wood
because there is no reason we need to be destroying our natural
environment and perpetuating the extinction of many species by logging
away their homes. We as a society must grow smarter and find more
efficient ways of doing things. By using science and technology there is no
reason we cannot survive as a species on
a beautiful planet and cohabitate with the other animal species.
